About The Dignity Group – Ontario:   SO. CALIFORNIA WILDFIRE TIPSHEET

LOS ANGELES - Southern California’s wildfires present special health hazards to humans and pets  – especially children, the elderly, and those with chronic respiratory problems such as emphysema, asthma, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and others. Zab Mosenifar, M.D., medical director of the Women’s Guild Lung Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, offers the following tips:

1.       Stay indoors as much as possible – and keep kids and pets inside, too. If you’re a runner or participate in other types of exercise, do it indoors. If you must be outside, protect your lungs and airways by covering your nose and mouth with a wet towel or cloth.

2.       If you have known respiratory problems, be sure to continue to use your inhaler.

3.       If you have a home or room air filter, use it. If you don’t have one, your home’s (and your car’s) air conditioning systems can help filter out particles in the air. Be sure your air conditioner filters are clean and that the system is set to the “recirculation” setting. This will allow your a/c to re-circulate the air inside the house rather than constantly bringing in outside air with smoke and small particles.

WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

If you, your children or your pets are experiencing coughing, wheezing or an inability to catch your breath, and if these symptoms persist, seek medical assistance.

For more information, visit the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Women’s Guild Lung Institute website: (http://www.cedars-sinai.edu/1509.html).

It hardly seems fair that the label big-wigs can sit comfortably in their offices knowing they have health insurance, while the bands that are out on the road making them money do not.  Musicians need to stay healthy, but unfortunately many of them don't see doctors and get treatment nearly as often as they need to because they don't have proper healthcare coverage.  The Rock for Health Organization has made a mission to change this.

"ROCK FOR HEALTH is a non profit organization that seeks to educate artists on health issues, provide necessary medical information and be an advocate for musicians in regards to health insurance coverage and long-term care. A population that is better informed about its health care coverage options will be better able to access needed care. ROCK FOR HEALTH will inform musicians on a wide variety of health issues including preventative health services, social, mental and occupational outreach. Through leadership, communication, and partnerships, ROCK FOR HEALTH is dedicated to the creation of a healthy musical environment in which artists and performers can perform at their peek physical and mental abilities. Without healthy musicians, we will not have music that is created to its highest potential. Sick artists cannot tour. ROCK FOR HEALTH wants to make their life and music healthy by helping them address health problems before they escalate into thousands of dollars worth of hospital bills."-rockforhealth.org

Common illnesses that musicians come down with are

 ·  Anxiety & Depression

·  Dehydration

·  Ear, Nose & Throat Injuries

·  Musculoskeletal disorders

·  Nutritional Deficiencies & Eating Disorders

·  Respiratory Disorders

·  Substance Abuse

·  Vision

·  Skin Disorders

Next time your favorite band cancels at tour due to illness, you may think twice about the seriousness of this issue.  Rock for Health is doing a tremendous job in spreading the word on the lack of healthcare and ways to make a change in the music industry. They're currently on the entire Vans Warped Tour promoting their cause.  All donations go directly to the organization and its cause.  You can also rock their sweet swag to build awareness on the issue.
