Riverside Municipal Auditorium is Back and Better than Ever!
By: Heather Harper 7/22/2015

The Riverside Municipal Auditorium (RMA) is not only a concert venue, but it is a multi-purpose facility that hosts anything from concerts to large banquets to even cheer competitions, and everything in between. Nestled in historic downtown Riverside, CA on the corner of Mission Inn Avenue and Lemon Street, the building captures the historic essence that downtown Riverside is known to exude.

Upon walking up to the venue one can’t help to believe that this venue was once a place of worship due to the intricate design that can be closely compared to that of a church or a mission. It’s a tall concrete building with lots of windows of different shapes with balconies, accompanied by beautiful Spanish-style tiles on the stairs and palm trees to tie it all in- creating a warming and welcoming ambiance. The venue’s architects also designed the popular and historic Mission Inn which is located only blocks away from The Riverside Municipal Auditorium.

The truth behind the venue is not that nuns used to reside there, although it is hard to tell because of the beautiful clay-tiled courtyard, which is surrounded by palms with fountains, ponds, and gardens included and is complimented by the beautiful woodwork and tile inside of the venue. The land was actually donated by the Mission Inn, and was built as a memorial for the 87 service members that resided in Riverside and fought in World War I- opened in 1928. In 1978 it was admitted into the National Register of Historic Places, and is considered a landmark of the City of Riverside. This three story venue can seat up to 1,400 people in its standing floor space, slightly elevated loge seating, and a great balcony- basically there is not a bad spot to sit or stand in the venue- wait staff also tends to guests as they are enjoying the show.

In April of 2014, the Fox Theater in Riverside took over the RMA. Since then, many changes and renovations have taken place- new VIP areas an upgraded garden area, and even a bean bag room where a guest can just hang out and take a quick break between shows if need be.  Lately, the RMA has been experimenting with movie nights where the whole family can enjoy a night together and concert after-parties where guests can hang-out after a show, maybe eat a bit of BBQ that the venue offers as a food choice, then leaving- instead of leaving the venue right after the show. It seems that the community is responding really well to these changes and the atmosphere that the RMA offers.

The community is not the only group of people that is responding well to the updated venue… but the performers are too. The RMA offers seven remodeled changing rooms upstairs, and one downstairs to accommodate the artists. There is also a “Wall of Fame” that artists can sign, which is generating great feedback from artists, and all of the artists that perform at the RMA comment on how much they love the stage because it is so much larger than other venues. The RMA has had huge success since the takeover last year. Bands such as Bush, Social D, and Dropkick have sold out the RMA, and Yelawolf was an exciting show that came pretty close to selling out.

Once a month a cover band will perform at the RMA- it is a great opportunity to get out of the house for a night, have a good time, and see a show locally at a great price. The RMA is constantly running contests, and continually adding shows so it is a great idea to check back to the website and social media sites frequently for a chance to win tickets to a show- they run four contests a month via social media. Meeting with my new friends from the RMA, I can tell that they love the guests and truly hope that the community is just excited as they are about this newer venue and what it has to offer.

Stay tuned for some very special and exciting X1039 events that are coming very soon at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium!
